The harrowing portraits were taken of the disturbed women in a bid to cure them. Little is known about these vulnerable women other than they were from pauper backgrounds. Dr Hugh Welch Diamond became convinced he was able to diagnose a patientís mental illness from their photographic portraits and then use the image heíd taken to cure the same patient.
